Yeah・・・

The swaying Sunday slips through crowds of people
The post-rain sky is yellow, determined to be cheery

Groups of metropolis seagulls swarm the Bay of Toyko
Their beaks are forced to rip through some other country’s trash bags
Between my body hair is white and black and gray
My insides are packed full with concrete
Shinagawa’s dull reflection makes me bewildered and lightheaded
A spot on my skin was seared with acidic rain, crowding me with so much anxiety
I touched it in a dream, and it was gone, having washed away unnoticed
As my heart was stuck with red rusty nails

My heart is being stabbed, hurry and remove these red rusty nails
My heart is being stabbed, hurry and remove these red rusty nails

My weekend philosophy floats with the city’s urging
But the end doesn’t even try to come
The tip of my 300 yen umbrella pierces the ground
Walk out empty handed as the rain stops falling
In the desert… Somewhere in the middle of the desert, it’s…
In the desert… Somewhere in the middle of the desert, is that feeling
This is relatively surprising… it’s really lonely

The swaying Sunday slips through crowds of people
The post-rain sky is yellow

Yeah・・・

Relatively… lonely

The Drifting / I Don’t Wanna Be With You

砂漠の朝を さまよって
無人島にたどりついたんだ・・・

かどわかされた夜 明けた街の色
やけにひどく黄色い ドロ沼に混ざった砂漠のよう

I Don’t Wanna Be With You・・・

———-

Wandering in the desert morning
I finally arrived at an unpopulated place

The color of dawn broke over the aimless city night
An awfully serious yellow, like a muddy swamp mixed with the desert
Knowing only your name, we became intertwined
I want to chat all night ’til we’re mad. The brink of parting comes too quickly
Such a fleeting morning, such an unconcerned morning
I don’t know anything but your name. Such a fleeting morning

Note: The single version of this song is different then the album version, as it is less electronic with a “live band” feel for the drums and bass. The single version uses the same lyrics but in a different order, with Mukai singing all the lyrics twice, but starting at “namae wa shika wakaranai” the first time. Also, the single version excludes the first 2 lines entirely, instead replacing them with Mukai singing “I don’t wanna be… I don’t wanna be…. I don’t wanna be…. I don’t wanna be with you.”

The taste of the wind is cold when I feel half-there
The sunset makes a sound as it blurs and falls down
Your voice is drowned out; I can’t hear it at all
Half the month passed, 3 minutes for every 1 day
When a woman is feeling rough, when a woman relies on a cat,
Her polished lower lip expands
Her face comes close like an enormous mother

Don’t know the name, but I learned that constellation long ago
A night of flowing clouds. Looks like sun tomorrow – No, a trap
The whirlpool in my heart takes it all in,
like it’s becoming kamaboko. This paradoxical way of speaking
is a shameful result; a shameful archive; a shameful assembly.
I serve it as a fancy cocktail
Enormous Mother will hold you as today you sleep again

Notes: Tarachine (or taratine) means mother, but has a connotation of breasts with it, sometimes regarding the woman who breastfeeds a child. The word 垂乳根 (tarachine) includes the character 乳 (chichi), which means breasts.

Flesh, joined together. A relationship, disconnected
An exchange of heartbeats
Joining our bodies to confirm our existence
A war-like relationship, clashing in opposition and agreement
A passing relationship. A disconnected relationship
Still disconnected

Emotions swaying, feelings going up and down
Clear and vague, ambitious behavior
A feeling of pressure, a self-aware sense of touch
This unfilled trench is very very deep
An exchange of heartbeats
I want direct communication
To be frank, I simply want to stick together for now

Fureai (ふれあい) is a difficult word to translate. It basically means an emotional relationship, ignoring exterior circumstances. The Wikipedia page is helpful: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fureai. In this sense, the speaker is probably lamenting modern day use of text messages or email to communicate, especially in relationships where he just wants to feel the touch of skin to skin.

A pierced singing voice. Weekend
A dress. A blue dress. A light triple braid
Untied and scattered everywhere. Dreamy fragments of a dress.

Friday night. Drowning in city crowds
I don’t know how to be tired. It’s a crazy dance weekend!

High tension. My eyeballs laugh and spin around
The deepest deep of midnight. You want this feeling to end?

Waiting at Honnoji…

Forever and ever and ever and ever, waiting at Honnoji

Taxi, go to the forest. They’re waiting. Taxi, go to the forest
A long history of bones, scattered and swimming in the graveyard
A procession of emergency tonjiru bowls, all lined up and waiting.
A UFO is flying. What came after those past years, 10 years ago.
A collapse of the time axis, next is the 100 years after. I’ll wait until then.

Waiting at Honnoji…

I leap backwards as I see microcosms on the veranda
I stiffen as I look up to the sky, breathing fumes of Hakka cigarettes
The neon signs of drug companies disappeared exactly ten years ago
The encircling helicopters still swirl around at midnight
A garbage truck crashed into on-street parking with red lights flashing
The fluttering summer bugs assemble at the orange color of the national highway street lights
The night begins. The questions begin.
I’m perfectly willing to talk to myself. The night begins.

Ruthless world phenomenon will repeat
And yet, my libido will certainly be reborn!

No time together…

The 45 degree tilt of Shinjuku Revolution Memorial Park Street
Gets desperately rough if you go down facing backward
I pretend to be ignorant on purpose, over and over
Just because of these premonitions of antipathetic nothingness!!

Looking back, with just a glance, I had decided it was a beautiful costume
Feminine woman like her had a sharp-eyed appeal for guys like me, or something like that

I feel like something is going to happen
That gaze, those eyes
I was expecting to start forgetting these failures some years ago, leaving them behind completely
For myself

“I can’t believe in myself and also be strong” this feminine, childish, feminine woman said.
I didn’t hear it

“I’ve come to start hating the tepid beginning of spring”
she said while in the futon, the meaning only coming to her 3 hours later
I didn’t hear it

The wind blows, she’s done being conditioned to have an interesting face
She distinctly spoke with the nuances of the Western Tokyo and Cambodia dialects
I didn’t really hear it

Then, 4 and a half hours later, on the subway, right before we parted, she spoke
“We still haven’t spent enough time together”
There were no words of farewell
I didn’t hear any of it

No time together…

Note: This song is particularly difficult to translate because of the nuances of the word “Asobi”. It can mean many different things. It’s mostly like the verb “to hang out” in English, or “to play” for younger kids. However, it can also mean to fool around, as in sexually, or fool around with alcohol and drugs or gambling. It can also follow the same lines as “going out” or dating someone. Mukai probably meant to blend some of these meanings in this song. So the meaning of “Asobitarinai” could be “We didn’t spend enough time together” (as in what the girl thought), “We didn’t fool around enough” (as in that’s all Mukai wants anyway), or “I’m not going to date you.” The first is most likely, so that’s what I used.
